From Humble Beginnings to Milking Millions, Zanzibar woman reveals farming secrets

In the heart of a small, sun-drenched village in Zanzibar, a woman Nasra Ali changed her life from dairy farming.

Nasra's journey began in the early 2020s when she decided to leverage the resources she had at hand—her livestock. She started with 3 dairy cows. Nasra initially saw milk production as merely a means to support her family. However, her vision extended beyond subsistence.

Recognising the growing demand for quality milk in her area and beyond, Nasra began to expand her dairy operations. She increased her herd, focusing on breeds known for higher milk yields, and learnt about animal husbandry to ensure her livestock were healthy and productive.

Her friend Surrah Abdul introduced her to Kiwanga doctors in the Tanzania mainland office. So Nasra visited them and was given business, prosperity, and protection spells, and that was the beginning of good things for the farm.

The turning point came when Nasra aligned her business with a dairy cooperative society, a move that granted her access to a broader market and the benefits of collective bargaining power.

By supplying her milk to a dairy firm, she ensured a steady income stream and quality assurance, which in turn bolstered her reputation among consumers. This partnership was crucial because it provided her with the infrastructure and support needed to scale her business without the burden of managing distribution herself.

Employing 15 people from her village, she not only created jobs but also fostered a sense of community development, with her success story inspiring others around her to consider entrepreneurship.
