Gachagua Accuses President Ruto of Plotting to Oust Chief Justice Koome, Warns of Consequences in Meru

In a fiery address on Sunday in Meru, Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua issued a stern warning to President William Ruto, alleging that the president is planning to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from office. Gachagua's claims were fueled by his assertion that Koome has remained firm in her role as the head of the Judiciary, resisting political pressure to align with the government's interests.

The former deputy president accused Koome's detractors of targeting her because of her independence and refusal to bow to political influence. He pledged that if President Ruto follows through with any efforts to dismiss the Chief Justice, he would be unwelcome in Meru.

"Martha Koome is being fought because she has refused to be a 'yes sir' person," Gachagua declared. "If you chase our Martha Koome, don't set foot in Meru. You chased Rigathi Gachagua, and the Mt. Kenya people were silent, you thought they were cowards. We are telling you, if you dare plan to chase Martha Koome, stay in Nairobi and do not step in Meru again."

Gachagua's remarks come amid ongoing speculation about the political tensions between the Judiciary and the executive. He also took a swipe at Meru's political leaders, accusing them of remaining silent as the alleged plot to remove Koome unfolded. He expressed disappointment that local leaders, including the senator and the region's ten MPs, have been quiet about the matter, implying that they may be receiving bribes from the top office.

"Martha Koome is being chased out, and the Senator is silent, all the 10 MPs are silent. What is happening to the people of Meru? These are the descendants of the Mau Mau. What has happened to the leadership of Meru?" Gachagua lamented.

This public condemnation from Gachagua comes after his impeachment in October 2024, which has seen him fiercely criticize President Ruto's leadership and the government's governance. His outspoken criticism is believed to be partly driven by frustrations over what he perceives as poor leadership and the sidelining of regional interests.

The allegations surrounding Koome’s position as Chief Justice are fueling tensions within the political landscape, with many questioning the influence of the executive over the judiciary. As the drama continues to unfold, all eyes will be on Meru, where Gachagua's warning suggests that the region may become a flashpoint in the battle between the government and the judiciary.
