Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to President William Ruto, cautioning him against attempts to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from office. Speaking during a church service in Meru on Sunday, February 23, 2025, Gachagua alleged that President Ruto is plotting to oust CJ Koome for not aligning with his directives, a move he vowed will not go unchallenged.
In his address, Gachagua stated, "She is being fought because she has refused to be a 'yes sir' person. If you chase our Martha Koome, don't set foot in Meru." He further warned, "We are telling you, if you dare plan to chase Martha Koome, stay in Nairobi and do not step in Meru again."
Gachagua also criticized the silence of political leaders in Meru during the alleged purge, accusing them of accepting bribes to remain quiet. He remarked, "Martha Koome is being chased out and the Senator is silent, all the 10 MPs are silent. What is happening to the people of Meru? These are the descendants of the Mau Mau. What has happened to the leadership of Meru?"
He concluded by threatening to mobilize Meru residents to protest against the government if CJ Koome is removed, expressing his discontent with what he perceives as an attack on the leadership of the Mt. Kenya region. "Huyu mama akifukuzwa, nipige firimbi mtoke kwa barabara mtatoka, hamtatoka? We are not going to sit again as William Ruto destroys the leadership of Mt. Kenya. It's too much it cannot be," he stated.
These remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Gachagua and President Ruto, highlighting the deepening political rift within the Kenyan leadership.
