Garissa Governor Nathif Jama Adam today led a delegation of elders from Garissa County to Holla, Tana River County, where they extended a formal apology to the Wardhey community. The visit aimed to address and mend relations following controversial remarks made by some leaders from sections of Garissa and Somalia, which caused significant distress to the Wardhey (IRDID) and Oromo (BARETUMA) communities.
The Governor, speaking on behalf of Garissa County and the larger Ogaden community, expressed deep regret for the statements, emphasizing that such comments were inconsistent with the values of unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence. "On behalf of the people of Garissa County and the Ogaden community, I express my deepest regret for these unfortunate statements," Governor Nathif stated. "Such reckless utterances are unacceptable at all costs."
The Governor reaffirmed his commitment to fostering peaceful relations among all communities, underlining that the actions of a few do not reflect the views of the wider population. "I want to reaffirm my commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence, and we will continue to work towards building a society where respect and unity prevail," he added.
The delegation's efforts to resolve the matter swiftly were met with a positive response from the Wardhey community, who accepted the apology and expressed their appreciation for the steps taken to address the situation.
The gesture has been hailed as a step towards healing and reaffirming the shared commitment to peace, respect, and unity among the communities. This act of reconciliation serves as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding in ensuring lasting peace in the region.
