In a move aimed at enhancing Kenya’s maritime sector, Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Geoffrey Kaituko, today presented the budget priorities for the State Department of Maritime Affairs for the fiscal year 2025/26. The presentation took place during a well-attended session of the Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, chaired by Hon. George K. Kariuki, Member of Parliament for Ndia Constituency.
Kaituko highlighted key projects and programs designed to strengthen Kenya’s position in the global maritime industry, with a special emphasis on empowering the youth. The proposed initiatives include training programs and placement opportunities for young Kenyans in the global maritime labor market.
"I urge all members to support these projects, which are crucial for equipping our youth with the necessary skills to thrive in the ever-evolving maritime sector," said Kaituko during his presentation.
The session, which received strong support from the committee members, is seen as a critical step towards improving Kenya's maritime workforce and contributing to the country's overall economic growth. With a growing demand for skilled professionals in the global maritime industry, these programs are expected to create numerous employment opportunities for young Kenyans.
As the maritime sector continues to be a key driver of Kenya’s economy, the budget proposals are viewed as a strategic move to enhance the country’s capacity to meet international maritime standards while fostering job creation for the youth.
