A new chapter has begun for Girigiri Village as the much-awaited Girigiri Village Electrification Project was officially launched, bringing reliable electricity to 51 beneficiaries, including Girigiri Primary School, a local church, homes, and small businesses. The electrification marks a transformative step towards improving the community's quality of life and creating new opportunities for growth.
The launch ceremony was attended by key figures, including the Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Nyamira County Senator Hon. Erick Okong’o, area MP Hon. Stephen Mohgaka, REREC South Nyanza regional manager Eng. Zack Magomere, Corporate Communications Manager Christine Ndwiga, and other local leaders. The event celebrated the positive impact of the project on the village and its residents.
For the students of Girigiri Primary School, the connection to the national grid is a game-changer. The classrooms, once dimly lit and limiting the students' ability to study effectively, will now benefit from bright lighting, allowing for extended study hours and improved learning conditions. Digital learning tools can now be accessed, providing students with a more diverse and enriched educational experience.
The local church, which previously struggled with lighting during evening services, can now hold vibrant, well-lit gatherings without the hassle of dim lanterns. The presence of reliable electricity is expected to enhance community events and increase participation in religious activities.
Homes and small businesses within the village will also thrive with access to electricity. The new power source will boost the local economy, creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs and improving living standards across the community.
This project is part of the government's broader efforts to bring reliable electricity to rural communities across the country. Currently, four electrification projects are underway in the West Mugirango constituency, set to connect 380 households to the grid upon completion. These efforts are part of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation’s (REREC) mission to light up rural Kenya, ensuring that no community is left behind in the journey towards national development.
During the launch, the Cabinet Secretary for Energy expressed optimism about the positive impact of such projects on rural communities. "Access to reliable electricity is a fundamental step towards improving livelihoods and empowering communities," he said. "We are committed to lighting up more villages, enabling them to harness opportunities for progress."
As Girigiri Village embraces a future powered by electricity, this milestone reflects the government's commitment to transforming rural Kenya through the provision of vital infrastructure that fosters growth, education, and opportunity for all.
