Kakamega Governor, FCPA Fernandes Barasa, alongside Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Salim Mvurya, visited the ongoing construction of Bukhungu Stadium to assess progress on Phases 2 and 3 of the project. The inspection, which took place on Wednesday, marks a significant milestone in the development of the stadium, set to play a key role in Kenya’s hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.
The ambitious project is being jointly managed by a technical team from both the national and county governments, following directives issued by President William Ruto during his visit to the region in January 2025.
Governor Barasa expressed confidence that the contractor is on schedule to complete the stadium by June 2026, well ahead of the continental tournament. "The completion of Bukhungu Stadium is not just an infrastructural achievement for Kakamega County, but for the entire country as we prepare to host AFCON 2027," Barasa said.
The stadium, designated as one of Kenya’s major venues for the prestigious football tournament, is expected to boost sports development and tourism in the region.
During the site visit, the delegation also included Principal Secretary for Sports, Peter Tum, officials from Sports Kenya, and county executives, including CECM Mophat Mandela, who provided updates on the project’s progress.
With the stadium’s development moving forward on schedule, the government is optimistic that the venue will meet international standards, providing an exceptional platform for the tournament and leaving a lasting legacy for sports in Kenya.
