Governor Jonathan Bii Hosts Athletics Kenya Team Ahead of National Cross Country Championships

Governor Jonathan Bii this morning hosted a team from Athletics Kenya and event organizers as they made final preparations for the highly anticipated National Cross Country Championships, set to take place on February 8, 2025, at the Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gishu County.

The championships, a key event in the athletics calendar, will bring together some of the best athletes from across the country, including many with hopes of qualifying for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The event will feature multiple race categories, including the 6km and 8km junior women and men’s races, the 10km senior women and men’s races, and the 2km race for both men and women.

Governor Bii emphasized the significance of the championships, highlighting its role in promoting sports tourism in the region. "This event not only provides our local athletes with an invaluable platform to compete at the national level, but it also draws attention to our county as a key sports destination," said Governor Bii. "We are excited to host this prestigious event, which will bring together people from all corners of the country, enhancing the visibility of Uasin Gishu as a sports hub."

The Governor also noted that the championships are an important step in the preparation of athletes for global competitions, with many eyeing spots in the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. "It’s a great opportunity for our athletes to test their mettle on the national stage before heading to international competitions," he said.

Preparations for the event are in full swing, with teams from across the country having already arrived. Over 500 athletes, selected through regional qualifiers, will compete for lucrative prizes, with winners in various categories set to earn significant amounts, thanks to the support of sponsors like Betika, AMACO, and the County Government of Uasin Gishu.

The Governor expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the local organizing committee and Athletics Kenya in ensuring that the event runs smoothly. "We are proud to play a role in supporting events that help nurture athletic talent and encourage youth participation in sports. This championship is a testament to the commitment we have towards fostering sports excellence in our county and beyond," added Governor Bii.

With excitement building in the lead-up to the competition, Governor Bii urged residents to turn out in large numbers to support the athletes. "Let’s come together to cheer on our athletes and showcase the spirit of sportsmanship that makes our county proud," he concluded.

The National Cross Country Championships are expected to provide thrilling races and further solidify Eldoret’s status as a key hub for athletics in Kenya.
