Governor Natembeya Pledges Support for Clean Energy Initiative

In a bid to combat environmental degradation and improve the health of local communities, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has expressed his full commitment to reducing reliance on harmful household cooking fuels such as biomass and kerosene.

Governor Natembeya made the announcement during a meeting with representatives from the National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK), led by Mr. Michael Rotich, the General Manager of Downstream Operations. The discussions centered on shifting towards cleaner and more sustainable cooking solutions, in line with the government’s vision for a green energy future.

“The use of biomass and kerosene as primary cooking fuels has not only contributed significantly to environmental degradation but also poses serious health risks to our people,” Governor Natembeya stated. "As a County, we are fully committed to embracing green and clean energy solutions to protect our environment and improve the quality of life for our citizens."

One of the key initiatives discussed during the meeting is the distribution of cooking gas cylinders to marginalized groups, including women, the elderly, youth, and people living with disabilities. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) as a cleaner alternative to traditional cooking methods.

Governor Natembeya reiterated his administration's unwavering support for the initiative, pledging to collaborate with NOCK and other stakeholders to ensure its successful implementation. He emphasized that providing access to clean cooking energy would bring lasting benefits to local communities, including reduced air pollution, improved health outcomes, and a more sustainable environment for future generations.

"We will ensure that no one is left behind in this transformation," he added. "Through this partnership, we are not only tackling immediate health concerns but also taking a major step towards a greener, more prosperous future for Trans Nzoia County."

The Governor’s statement follows ongoing efforts by the national government and its partners to push for the widespread adoption of cleaner energy alternatives, marking a significant step in addressing the climate crisis and safeguarding public health.
