Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wesley Rotich officially commissioned a state-of-the-art Mother and Baby Unit at Chebiemit Sub County Hospital in Moiben-Kuserwo Ward. The new facility, developed through a partnership with the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SUOMI Finland), is set to significantly improve maternal and neonatal care in the region.
The modern unit includes an 8-bed prenatal and antenatal ward, a well-equipped birthing area, and vital equipment such as new-born incubators and a phototherapy machine. The phototherapy machine will be instrumental in treating skin conditions and jaundice in newborns, enhancing care for infants in need.
Governor Rotich emphasized the importance of the new facility, noting that the equipment like the Electro Cardiogram (ECG) will be used to monitor heart conditions, improving the management of maternal health. The unit also features a "Sterile Wave" — an innovative waste disposal machine that efficiently crushes waste products, further promoting a clean and safe healthcare environment. Additionally, the facility is equipped with 40,000-litre water tanks to ensure a consistent and reliable water supply, an essential component in maintaining hygiene and operational efficiency.
Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Rotich expressed his commitment to advancing healthcare services across Elgeyo Marakwet County. “This new unit will not only improve healthcare delivery for expectant mothers and newborns but will also contribute to the well-being of the entire community. I am proud of the partnership with SUOMI Finland and grateful for their contribution to this vital project,” he said.
Key stakeholders present during the event included Erastus Karani, Nelson Kariuki, and Teresiah Kinyaga from the Ministry of Health, as well as Lukas Landerl and Duncan Kemboi from Vameed, the construction partner. Other attendees included County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Monicah Rotich, Chief Officers Jeremy Chirchir and Caroline Magut, Chebiemit Medsup Prisca Kibet, and Dr. Lawrence Kogos, among other county staff.
The commissioning of the Mother and Baby Unit is a major milestone in the county’s efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and services. Governor Rotich reaffirmed that the county government remains dedicated to ensuring that every resident has access to quality health services, particularly in critical areas such as maternal and child health.
