Human Rights Activist Calls for Investigation into Mob Killings in Murang’a and Concerns Over Political Incitement

In the wake of recent mob killings in Murang’a, suspected to involve individuals linked to the outlawed Mungiki sect, human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich has urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the truth. Ngetich, a prominent figure in the human rights community, voiced concerns over the possible political implications surrounding the incident.

The two individuals were killed in a brutal mob attack, a tragedy that has sparked widespread condemnation. According to Ngetich, this killing is part of a larger pattern of violence that has become more pronounced following recent remarks by the former deputy president, suggesting that the government had revived the Mungiki group for political gain. The accusations made by the former deputy president and his allies have raised alarms that the violence may be linked to political rivalry, particularly after the deputy president's impeachment.

“We call for a thorough investigation into these killings,” Ngetich said in a statement. “The situation is highly suspicious, especially considering the timing of the deaths in relation to recent political statements. It is critical that we allow proper legal processes to unfold rather than resorting to mob justice, which only exacerbates the already tense political climate.”

Ngetich also condemned the growing trend of political leaders publicly discussing security concerns without first involving the authorities. He pointed out that elected leaders raising alarms in the media, without reporting incidents to the police or requesting appropriate security, risks inciting emotions and fueling divisiveness. According to Ngetich, such statements from public figures contribute to a climate of fear and uncertainty, particularly in regions like Central Kenya, where political tensions have been heightened following the deputy president’s ousting.

“It is important to note that mob justice undermines the constitutional rights of suspects and creates a dangerous precedent. The law should be allowed to take its course,” Ngetich emphasized. “The government needs to take stronger measures to monitor political developments in Central Kenya and ensure that peace and stability are not jeopardized.”

The human rights activist further cautioned political leaders, especially the former deputy president and his allies, about the potential consequences of divisive rhetoric. “We must resist the urge to divide the people of Mt Kenya from the rest of the nation. The people of Mt Kenya are Kenyans, and it is wrong to incite them against the government or the broader population. We all deserve to live in a peaceful, united country.”

In addressing the youth of Central Kenya, Ngetich urged them not to be manipulated by politicians into participating in acts of violence or spreading hate. “It is crucial that we learn from the experiences of other nations, like Somalia and Sudan, where insecurity and political instability have led to devastating consequences,” he warned. “Our strength lies in unity, and it is up to all of us to ensure that we safeguard the peace we have enjoyed for decades.”

Ngetich also expressed concerns over statements made by politicians, particularly Maina Njenga, who has publicly distanced himself from the Mungiki sect. He cautioned against linking any individual to the sect without clear evidence, emphasizing that such reckless claims are harmful to the peace and stability of both Central Kenya and the wider nation.

“The politicization of security matters is dangerous, and we must hold all political figures accountable for their words and actions,” Ngetich concluded. “It is imperative that we maintain law and order and resist any attempts to manipulate the people for political gain.”

As the situation continues to unfold, Ngetich’s call for calm and thorough investigation is a crucial step toward ensuring justice for the victims and preventing further escalation of political tensions in the country.
