Renowned Eldoret-based human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich has strongly condemned the recent inflammatory remarks made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Ngetich, speaking to the press, described Gachagua’s comments as reckless, divisive, and a clear attempt to destabilize the Kenyan government.
"Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s call for demonstrations, his threats to bar people from Central Kenya, and his tribal rhetoric are dangerous and unacceptable," Ngetich stated. "Such statements are a direct incitement to violence and a clear signal that he is positioning himself as a warlord rather than a responsible leader."
Ngetich also questioned Gachagua's continuous attempts to divide communities, pointing out that the former deputy president's remarks targeting the Meru community as "victims" of judicial bias were not only irresponsible but also deeply tribalistic. According to Ngetich, the Kenyan judiciary operates independently and follows due process when handling cases involving judges, and no community or ethnic group is immune to scrutiny.
"It is deeply unfortunate that Gachagua, after his impeachment, continues to exploit ethnic divisions for personal political gain. He is feeding a narrative that serves only to isolate communities and sow discord among Kenyans," Ngetich continued. "His calls for revenge and targeting individuals based on their ethnic backgrounds should be condemned by all patriotic citizens."
Ngetich emphasized that public office holders, including judges, are not representatives of their ethnic groups but serve the entire nation and uphold the Constitution. He also highlighted that Kenyans must reject leaders who preach hate, division, and vengeance. He warned that allowing such leaders to rise to power would threaten the unity and peace that the country has worked so hard to build.
The activist also urged the security apparatus to take the threats seriously. "Gachagua’s comments are not merely political statements. His words have the potential to incite violence and pose a serious risk to the safety of the Head of State and the peace of the nation," Ngetich said.
Further, Ngetich raised concerns over Gachagua’s recent remark about banning the president from setting foot in Central Kenya, asking whether the former deputy president was alluding to the presence of a ‘hit squad’ or dangerous forces within the region. He called on the Inspector General of Police and the Director of National Intelligence to urgently investigate Gachagua’s statements.
"It is imperative that we know what Gachagua meant by this. Does he have the means or intention to organize any attack on the president? These remarks cannot be dismissed as mere political rhetoric. They carry significant weight, and the public deserves to know the truth," Ngetich stated.
Ngetich also criticized the lack of condemnation from church leaders, urging them to stand up and denounce such divisive and dangerous rhetoric. He called on the people of Central Kenya to remain united with the rest of the nation and resist any attempts to turn them against fellow Kenyans.
"The truth is that Kenya belongs to all of us, and no one community should be made to feel that they are above others. Gachagua’s divisive rhetoric will only serve to destabilize the country and destroy the unity that is vital for our progress," said Ngetich.
As the political tensions continue to escalate, Ngetich appealed to Kenyans to focus on building a peaceful and unified society, free from tribalism and hate. He urged the public to reject any attempts to turn political discourse into a tool for ethnic conflict and to stand firm in defending the Constitution and the rule of law.
"We must not allow leaders like Gachagua, who seek power through division, to succeed. The future of Kenya depends on our ability to stand together as one nation," Ngetich concluded.
