Human Rights Activists Condemn Attacks on Uasin Gishu County Officials, Demand Justice

Human Rights Activist in Eldoret have condemned the recent violent incidents targeting Uasin Gishu County officials, calling for immediate action and justice. Kimutai Kirui, an Eldoret-based human rights activist, led the charge, addressing the media and demanding accountability for the attack on Uasin Gishu’s City Manager, Tito Koiyet.

“We are here today to condemn the criminal act that occurred in Uasin Gishu, where the City Manager was attacked in his office. This act of violence is uncalled for, illegal, and unconstitutional,” said Kirui. “We stand with the staff of the Uasin Gishu County Government, who are employed by the County, not Governor Jonathan Bii, and who deserve to work in a safe and supportive environment.”

Kirui condemned the use of “goons” by the county government to intimidate and harass officials, asserting that there are legal avenues for the removal of officers, including the County Assembly, the courts, or a direct request from the governor for resignation. He further criticized the actions of the director of enforcement, who was reportedly present during the attack on Koiyet, as well as the organized nature of the assault, which was planned and executed with clear intent.

“The director of enforcement’s presence during the attack is concerning. This was clearly a planned, organized act, and it appears that the perpetrators are sharing the loot outside the municipal offices,” Kirui added.

The activists called for the resignation of Julius Kitur, the Chairman of Eldoret City, for his apparent involvement in the crisis. They also urged the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to take swift action to arrest those responsible for the assault, including two female staff members who were also attacked.

David Juma, another human rights activist from Eldoret, expressed his concerns about the growing impunity in the county, pointing out that Uasin Gishu is supposed to be a model county, but has instead allowed a “brutal gang” to control the leadership.

“We are here to condemn the impunity of these organized gangs. Uasin Gishu is supposed to be a model county, but now it is being ruled by goons. County staff are living in fear, extorted for money in order to carry out their duties. This is unacceptable,” Juma said. “We call on the security personnel to investigate and expose who these gangs are working for, as they are operating freely in daylight without fear.”

The activists also called on the County Commissioner, Dr. Edison Nyale, to take decisive action against the perpetrators and demanded that Governor Jonathan Bii clarify his relationship with the gangs, whose influence appears to stretch across the county’s leadership.

“We want to know what the governor’s relationship with these gangs is. They operate with impunity, and it seems they are connected to powerful individuals within the county. This cannot continue,” Juma concluded.

As tensions rise in Uasin Gishu, the activists’ calls for justice and transparency continue to grow. The DCI has yet to respond to the demands for arrests, while the Uasin Gishu County Government faces increased scrutiny over the safety and independence of its staff.
