Juja Member of Parliament, Hon. David Kiumburi, has been formally charged with the forgery of academic documents, a development that has sent shockwaves through the political scene in the region.
Kiumburi, who has served two terms representing Juja stands accused of falsifying both his university degree and secondary school certificates in order to qualify for his parliamentary seat. The investigation into the matter was initiated after an anonymous whistleblower submitted documents suggesting discrepancies in his academic credentials.
On Monday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that forensic analysis had revealed forged signatures and stamps on the certificates in question. According to prosecution officials, Kiumburi allegedly used the fraudulent documents to gain admission to a renowned university and later to secure his candidacy during the last general elections.
The MP appeared in court on Tuesday, where he denied the charges, maintaining that the allegations were politically motivated. His defense lawyer argued that the accusations were part of an attempt to damage Kiumburi’s reputation ahead of the upcoming elections.
Following his court appearance, Kiumburi was granted bail under strict conditions, which include surrendering his passport and reporting to authorities on a weekly basis. Should he be convicted, Kiumburi faces a potential prison sentence of up to ten years, along with disqualification from holding any future public office.
The case has sparked a heated public debate, with opposition leaders calling for Kiumburi’s immediate resignation, while his supporters have rallied behind him, insisting on his innocence. As the legal proceedings continue, attention remains focused on the integrity of Juba’s political leadership and the potential impact of the case on the upcoming elections.
The next court hearing in the case is scheduled for March 25, with many anticipating further developments in this high-profile legal battle.
