Juja Member of Parliament (MP), George Koimburi, was arrested on Sunday and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for interrogation after making controversial claims regarding government spending.
Koimburi, who has been a vocal critic of the government, alleged that a staggering Sh13 billion had been spent by the government on the unsuccessful bid of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). The MP’s claims have sparked widespread outrage and raised concerns about the alleged misuse of public funds.
The arrest follows a formal complaint filed by government officials, who have denied the allegations, calling them baseless and misleading. The government has since stated that the claims by the MP are false and detrimental to the integrity of the public service.
In his statements, Koimburi claimed that a significant amount of taxpayer money was diverted toward supporting Odinga’s candidacy, which ultimately ended in failure. These claims come at a time of heightened political tension in the country, with various leaders and political groups aligning against the government.
Speaking to journalists before his arrest, Koimburi stated, “The truth must come out, and it’s high time the Kenyan people know where their money is going. The Sh13 billion is not a small amount, and we deserve answers.”
Meanwhile, DCI officers have confirmed that Koimburi is under investigation for the alleged dissemination of false information with the intent to cause public alarm. His legal team has requested that the MP be granted a chance to present his evidence in defense of his claims.
The situation has drawn both support and condemnation from various political quarters, with some rallying behind Koimburi for exposing alleged government mismanagement, while others argue that his statements could undermine national unity and cause unnecessary political strife.
