Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa Condemns Violence at Mzee Agostino Odongo’s Funeral

Kakamega Governor, Fernandez Barasa, has strongly condemned the violence that erupted in Matungu during the funeral of the late Senior Administrator and Former Director Mzee Agostino Odongo. The tragic incident marred what should have been a dignified send-off for a man who was not only a beacon of peace but also a dedicated public servant who made significant contributions to his community.

Mzee Odongo, a Senior Chief and Director at Mumias Outgrowers Company (MOCO), was known for his leadership, wisdom, and commitment to fostering unity and peace. His funeral, meant to celebrate his legacy, was disrupted by chaotic scenes that Governor Barasa described as deeply disturbing.

“I strongly condemn the violence witnessed today in Matungu. Mzee Odongo was a man of peace who dedicated his life to serving his community. He deserved a dignified farewell, not the chaos that unfolded,” said Governor Barasa. “It is disheartening to see such disorder disrupt what should have been a solemn occasion for family, friends, and the community to honor a great leader.”

The violence, reportedly instigated by former Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa, left the gathering in disarray. Governor Barasa stressed that such behavior, especially when orchestrated through the manipulation of young people to incite unrest, is completely unacceptable.

“I call upon our security agencies to take swift and firm action against those responsible for these acts of violence,” Barasa continued. “No one should be allowed to use young people to cause chaos and disrupt peaceful gatherings, whether they are public events or family occasions. These actions have no place in our society and must be dealt with decisively.”

The Governor further emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order in all aspects of public life and urged all citizens to respect the memory of Mzee Odongo by promoting unity and civility.

“We must stand united against such divisive acts. Mzee Odongo’s life was a testament to peace and service. Let us honor his memory by upholding the values he instilled in our community,” Barasa added.
