Once struggling with infrastructure and academic decline, Kakamega High School is now on a fast track to reclaiming its lost glory, thanks to the bold leadership of Chief Principal Dr. Julius Mambili.
In just two years since his transfer from Litein High School, Dr. Mambili has spearheaded a transformation that has seen the school improve its facilities, sustainability measures, and academic performance. His ambitious reforms have not only elevated the institution’s standing but have also set the stage for a historic academic milestone in 2024.
A School in Decline Gets a Lifeline
When Dr. Mambili took over, Kakamega High School was in dire need of rehabilitation. Classrooms were dilapidated, the sanitation system was overstretched, and essential amenities like water and electricity were costly and unreliable.
Determined to turn things around, he initiated an extensive environmental rehabilitation program, planting trees, paving walkways with cabro blocks, and repainting classrooms while repairing broken window panes.
Mega Infrastructure Projects
To address congestion, a new dormitory accommodating 500 students was built, alongside a modern urinal facility for 1,000 students. Additionally, a waste digester system was installed to improve sanitation.
One of the most significant challenges was water supply. Dr. Mambili tackled this by drilling a second borehole and installing water storage tanks, ensuring a steady and reliable water supply for the entire school.
His sustainability agenda went a step further with the installation of a 25kV hybrid power plant and a solar energy system worth Ksh 5 million, which now powers the school. As a result, electricity bills—previously at Ksh 500,000 per month—have drastically reduced, and water costs have also gone down.
To improve learning conditions, six modern classrooms, each accommodating 80 students, were constructed, easing congestion and enhancing the teaching environment.
A Sporting and Academic Revival
Beyond infrastructure, Dr. Mambili has aggressively revamped co-curricular activities, breathing new life into the school’s famous football and rugby teams. The impact has been evident, with the teams showing strong performances in national competitions.
Another groundbreaking initiative under his leadership was the introduction of the first-ever alumni week, a move that has reconnected former students with the institution, fostering mentorship and financial support.
On the academic front, Kakamega High School recorded one of its best results in recent years, a sign that the turnaround strategy is working. Encouraged by this progress, Dr. Mambili has registered 668 candidates for the 2024 KCSE exams, setting an ambitious target of a mean score of 9.0.
A New Era for Kakamega High
With these sweeping changes, Kakamega High School is no longer just another institution—it is a model of resilience and visionary leadership. As 2025 unfolds, the school community is optimistic that the best is yet to come.
Last year, the school registered 394 candidates with a direct entry to public university.
For Dr. Mambili, the mission is clear: restore Kakamega High School to its rightful place among Kenya’s top academic and sporting powerhouses. If the past two years are anything to go by, that goal is well within reach.
