Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Managing Director, Esther Ngari, today met with the KEBS HQ Metrology team before touring the organization’s advanced metrology laboratories. The visit underscored KEBS' commitment to maintaining high precision and reliability in measurements, ensuring compliance with national and international standards.
KEBS operates 15 metrology laboratories, each specializing in different measurement parameters crucial to Kenya’s industrial, medical, and scientific sectors. Among these, the Temperature Laboratory stands out as a premier facility, leading in temperature calibration across East Africa.
As the national custodian of the SI unit of temperature in Kenya, the laboratory ensures traceability to international standards through high-precision calibrations, leveraging national reference standards and a team of highly qualified technical experts. Its scope of work includes calibration of temperature-sensing devices and thermometers, both contact and non-contact, as well as conditioned chambers such as fridges, freezers, cold rooms, refrigerated trucks, furnaces, and sterilizers.
The Temperature Laboratory has maintained ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation by DAkkS, Germany, since 1997. Additionally, its Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs) are recognized and published in the BIPM Key Comparison Database (BIPM KCDB)—the highest level of international recognition in measurement science.
Speaking during the visit, MD Esther Ngari emphasized KEBS' role in enhancing industrial efficiency, consumer safety, and trade competitiveness through metrological excellence. She reaffirmed the organization's dedication to upholding global standards, ensuring that Kenyan industries and businesses benefit from accurate, reliable, and internationally recognized calibration services.
The visit highlighted KEBS’ continued efforts to strengthen Kenya’s position as a leader in measurement science within the region, fostering growth and innovation across multiple sectors.
