The Government of Kenya has launched a series of immediate, short-term, and long-term measures to strengthen border security, following a recent cross-border incident between Kenyan citizens and members of the Dassanech community from Ethiopia.
While visiting Todonyang, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen expressed condolences to the families of those who remain unaccounted for following the Saturday confrontation. Murkomen assured the affected families that all efforts would be made to locate and bring back their loved ones. "No effort will be spared in searching for the missing and ensuring peace is restored in this region," he said.
To reinforce security along the country's borders, the Government is increasing the number of National Police Reservists, who will be better equipped and incentivized to handle threats from militias and criminal gangs. The reservists, crucial in supporting the regular security agencies, will now have enhanced resources to safeguard the border areas.
Additionally, Murkomen highlighted that the welfare of the police reservists is a priority, and more border posts are being established to improve monitoring and accountability of those crossing into and out of Kenya. These measures aim to mitigate the risks posed by cross-border criminal activities and enhance the country's border security infrastructure.
"Together with our partners in Ethiopia, we will intensify efforts to resolve the situation and ensure lasting peace in the region," Murkomen stated. He instructed the National Police Service leadership, in collaboration with Ethiopian authorities, to prioritize the safe return of all Kenyans involved in the incident.
The CS was accompanied by East African Community Affairs and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Abdi Hassan, Turkana North MP Ekwom Nabuin, Deputy Inspector General of the National Police Service Eliud Lagat, and GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni, among other key officials.
