Kimilili Member of Parliament, Didmus Barasa, has lashed out at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of promoting tribalism and undermining national unity. Speaking at an event in Moi’s Bridge on February 2nd, Barasa called for Gachagua to be “rehabilitated” and reintroduced to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as a “brand ambassador for tribalism.”
Barasa’s remarks came in response to what he described as Gachagua’s consistent prioritization of his native region, which he claimed fueled divisiveness in the country. “The secretary general of UDA, Hassan Omar, should start a program so that the national committee can rehabilitate Rigathi Gachagua,” Barasa stated. He continued, “If he reforms, we can consider bringing him back as a member of UDA and assign him the role of brand ambassador for tribalism so that he can preach against it.”
The MP also expressed deep concern over what he sees as a growing trend among Kenyan leaders to act in ways that contradict their calls for unity. Barasa went on to accuse Gachagua of undermining efforts to foster national cohesion by using divisive tactics.
“Tribalism can pull you down from a respectable position to a position of an individual who is not even fit to chair a funeral committee,” Barasa warned, emphasizing the damaging effects of ethnic division.
The outspoken criticism from Barasa serves as a pointed reminder of the challenges Kenya continues to face in bridging ethnic divides. His remarks underscore the need for continued efforts to promote unity and combat the negative impact of tribalism in the country.
