KNCCI to Boost Businesses in Elgeyo Marakwet County with Market Access and Capital Support

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KNCCI) has unveiled plans to support businesses in Elgeyo Marakwet County by providing access to new markets and offering capital injections aimed at accelerating business growth. Speaking during a recent visit to Iten, KNCCI President, Dr. Erick Ruto, revealed that the chamber is undergoing a transformative agenda designed to empower small-scale businesses and help them thrive in the country’s emerging economic landscape.

Dr. Ruto emphasized the chamber’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for business growth, where entrepreneurs can not only survive but also scale their operations to new heights. "Our vision is to help small and medium-sized businesses tap into national and international markets, thereby contributing to a wealthier nation. We want to see businesses in Elgeyo Marakwet thrive and expand their reach," he said.

The KNCCI president pointed out that the chamber's efforts go beyond market access. It is actively working on linking local businesses with international markets. Dr. Ruto shared an example of a member, a toilet paper producer, who had secured a substantial market that requires up to five tonnes of tissue paper at once. He expressed hope that the business could meet the growing demand with the support of the chamber.

“We already have a significant market for one of our members who produces toilet paper. The demand is so high that it requires around five tonnes of tissue paper per order, and we are optimistic that this will be met with the support of the chamber,” Dr. Ruto added. He further commended the Elgeyo Marakwet County government for its role as a reliable business partner in helping to promote and protect the interests of local businesses. “The county government has been incredibly supportive in fostering an environment where businesses can grow and succeed,” he said.

Philomena Tanui, CEO of Leafy Plus Tissue Company, expressed her gratitude for the support extended by KNCCI. She specifically thanked the chamber for helping her business secure market linkages and access low-interest capital loans, which have been crucial in the company’s expansion. “Through the chamber’s efforts, we have gained access to new markets, which is crucial for the growth of our business,” Tanui said. "Additionally, the opportunity to access affordable capital has enabled us to improve production capacity and meet the growing demand."

In a further bid to empower local businesses, KNCCI, in collaboration with the Department of Trade, will organize an international exhibition later this year. The exhibition will provide a platform for local businesses to showcase their products to a global audience, creating new opportunities for growth and collaboration.

Mr. Robert Kangogo, the County Executive Committee (CEC) for Trade, highlighted the significant role that small industries play in job creation and economic development. He noted that to date, 178 cottage industries have been established and registered in Elgeyo Marakwet County, providing employment to many locals. Additionally, 650 entrepreneurs have been trained to help them develop the skills needed to grow their businesses.

"Small industries are the backbone of our economy. They provide employment opportunities with relatively lower capital investments, which is why our county continues to prioritize their growth," Mr. Kangogo stated. “We are ready and willing to collaborate with the business community to ensure that we protect their interests and create a favorable environment for trade and investment.”

The county government has also expressed its commitment to improving the local business climate by advocating for policies that foster commerce, trade, and investment. Mr. Kangogo further emphasized that the county is always ready to support the business community by ensuring that they have the resources, tools, and opportunities they need to succeed.

The visit also saw the attendance of Elizabeth Korir, the Department's Chief Officer, Silas Kiplagat, the Department’s Director, and other key staff members. They engaged with business owners and entrepreneurs in the region to better understand the challenges they face and identify ways in which KNCCI and the county government can provide further support.

With these continued efforts and collaboration between the KNCCI and Elgeyo Marakwet County, local businesses are poised for greater success, with increased access to markets and capital, setting the stage for sustainable growth and innovation in the region.
