Salvation Army Kolanya Girls National School's Chief Principal, Dr. Tabitha Okama, has expressed confidence that the institution, which emerged the top performer in the 2024 KCSE exams in Busia County, has the potential to improve even further in future performances. Speaking after the school’s outstanding achievement, Dr. Okama emphasized that the school is on a determined journey as a national school, with the goal of retaining its excellent academic standards.
Despite the positive results, Dr. Okama noted that the school faces significant infrastructure challenges, particularly a shortage of space for key facilities such as dormitories and a dining hall. She called for support to address these challenges and ensure the school continues to grow and thrive on the national stage.
The 2024 KCSE introduced a new grading system aimed at enhancing fairness. Under this new structure, all students are required to be assessed in mathematics, a compulsory subject, while grading now considers only the best-performed language among English, Kiswahili, or Kenya Sign Language, instead of the previous system where both English and Kiswahili were mandatory.
Dr. Okama pointed out that the school had given mathematics a priority for the past three years, implementing various programs, including special sessions twice a week and attitude-building initiatives to address students who struggle with the subject.
Nairobi Assembly Majority Leader, Peter Imwatok, praised the school's remarkable performance, especially considering the challenges of the current educational environment. He commended the school for emerging as one of the top 5 in Western Kenya and stressed the importance of timely capitation funding from the government.
Elizabeth Marangach, the Director for Teso North Sub County, also lauded the school for making the sub-county proud by topping the county in the 2024 KCSE, despite issues such as a broken borehole. Reflecting on the progress made, Ms. Marangach highlighted that Teso North had moved from the lowest position in KCSE rankings 10 years ago to second place in 2023 and finally to first place in 2024.
In a show of confidence for the future, Ms. Marangach urged teachers to continue their tireless efforts in imparting knowledge to students, stating that the discipline of the 2025 KCSE candidates was already of the highest standard, with expectations for even better results.
Board of Management Chairperson, Gladys Nabiswa, noted the importance of community support in the school’s success, and emphasized that their efforts were already bearing fruit. Former Women Representative, who visited the school in 2022, also expressed her willingness to meet with candidates and discuss their career paths.
Angurai East Member of the County Assembly, David Parapara, praised the school for its role in making his ward the top performer in the county in the 2024 KCSE, alongside Kolanya Boys, which finished second. He acknowledged that the region had become a notable academic zone, thanks to the remarkable performances from Kolanya Girls and Kolanya Boys.
The school’s success in the 2024 KCSE has certainly placed it at the forefront of academic excellence in the region, with an unwavering commitment to nurturing future leaders.
