Leaders Urged to Uphold Integrity in Management of Cooperative Societies and Saccos

Leaders of cooperative societies and Saccos have been urged to prioritize integrity and effective leadership to ensure the success of their organizations and the achievement of their set objectives. The call was made by Martha Cheruto, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade and Cooperatives, during a training session for members of Kapsaos Ukulima Sacco and Kapsaos Cooperative Society on Monday.

Cheruto emphasized that managing cooperative societies is a strategic process that requires strong leadership. She highlighted that effective management not only offers a competitive edge but also guarantees that the needs of the members are met. “As leaders, you need to set the right direction that aligns with the aspirations of your members,” she stated, encouraging cooperative societies to remain committed to upholding values of transparency and good governance.

In her speech, Cheruto also urged the societies to take advantage of the County Enterprise Development Fund (CEDF), which provides loans at a favorable interest rate of 5% per annum. This fund is designed to empower and support cooperative societies and Saccos economically.

Hon. Isaac Chepkulei, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kapsaos, who was present at the training, announced that plans were underway for the establishment of the Kapsaos market. He assured the participants that the project would be included in the Economic Stimulus Program (ESP) under the leadership of Governor Jonathan Bii. “Through Governor Jonathan Bii’s leadership, we will be included in the Economic Stimulus Program (ESP) for the establishment of our market,” Chepkulei affirmed.

The training, which focused on several key areas including shares mobilization, savings, the NAVCDP Program, the significance of Artificial Insemination (AI), land rates, and land segregation, was attended by various cooperative leaders. Key attendees included John Rotich, the Deputy Director for Cooperatives, and cooperative officers Edwin Keitany and Brigit Makena.

The session provided valuable insights into the ways cooperative societies can strengthen their operations and enhance their contribution to local economic development.
