Market Day Drama: When Domestic Disputes Become Public Entertainment

By Entrepreneur Coach Kevin Okwara

In the heart of our bustling village, market day is not just about trade—it’s a spectacle of life, a melting pot of commerce, culture, and, sometimes, unexpected entertainment. Vendors hawk their goods, swindlers scheme their next con, and pickpockets lurk in the shadows. Somewhere in the midst of this vibrant chaos, a heated marital dispute unfolds, turning what should have been a private matter into a full-blown public affair.

On this particular day, a couple, embroiled in a fierce argument, chooses the market as their battleground. Their grievances—ranging from household finances to bedroom matters—are laid bare before an audience that neither asked nor paid for the drama. Some spectators sympathize and take sides, others laugh heartily, enjoying the distraction as they haggle over fresh produce, while idlers relish the free show that helps them pass time. Even the local madman, known for his unsolicited wisdom, seizes the opportunity to dispense his own brand of marriage advice.

Not far from the commotion, a preacher passionately delivers his sermon through a loudspeaker, his voice clashing with the quarrel for dominance. Yet, despite his divine efforts, the crowd is more invested in the unfolding domestic saga than in matters of salvation.

As twilight sets in and the market winds down, traders count their earnings, pickpockets disappear into the alleys, and the gossip migrates into homes and local drinking dens. Over plates of steaming ugali and roasted meat, families dissect the day’s events, with one topic dominating the conversations—the couple’s dramatic outburst. At the local pub, drunks and twilight girls find solace in the story, adding their own embellishments as laughter and clinking glasses fill the night.

But who really cares about their marital woes? After all, it was just another market day, where everyone consumes what interests them. And today, the trending market gossip was about a couple who turned their personal strife into public discourse.

Yet, beyond the laughter and whispers, this spectacle holds a lesson for entrepreneurs. In business, much like in life, not all matters deserve a public stage. Some conflicts are best resolved in private, for in the marketplace, perception is everything. You either sell a product—or become the product of gossip.

So, what actually takes you to the market? Do you go to trade, to buy, or simply to consume the latest drama? Because in the end, a market is more than just a place of exchange—it’s where stories are made, shared, and sold.
