The heart and spirit of Kenya's football scene were on full display recently when Moiben Member of Parliament, Prof. Phylis Bartoo, had the honor of meeting the incredible women of Mutei FC. These exceptional athletes, all over the age of 50, are preparing to represent Kenya in the prestigious 2025 Grannies International Football Tournament (GIFT) set to take place in Nkowankowa, Limpopo, South Africa, from April 2 to 5.
During the visit, Prof. Bartoo was struck by the immense passion, determination, and unwavering love for the beautiful game that the players exhibited. Despite facing numerous challenges, these talented women have shown resilience and strength, both on and off the field. Their dedication to training and commitment to one another as teammates is nothing short of inspiring.
“I had the privilege to meet these amazing women, and I am truly moved by their spirit,” said Prof. Bartoo. “Their enthusiasm for football and the camaraderie they share is a testament to the power of sport in uniting communities and empowering individuals, regardless of age. They are role models to us all.”
Mutei FC’s participation in the 2025 GIFT marks a milestone not only for the team but for Kenyan women in sports. These grannies are not just athletes—they are pioneers, breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes about age and gender in competitive sports. The tournament in Limpopo will bring together women from various countries, showcasing the global impact of sport as a tool for empowerment.
“Their journey has just begun, and as they represent Kenya on the international stage, we are all behind them,” Prof. Bartoo added. “They carry with them the hopes and pride of all Kenyans. We wish them all the best as they take on this challenge. Go make Kenya proud!”
As Mutei FC prepares to travel to South Africa, they will undoubtedly inspire countless others—proving that it is never too late to follow one’s passion and make a mark in the world. The country will be cheering them on every step of the way.
