MPs Travel to Addis Ababa to Rally Support for Raila Odinga's AU Chairmanship Bid

A delegation of Kenyan Members of Parliament (MPs) has departed for Addis Ababa to advocate for Raila Odinga's bid to become the next Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). The MPs, representing a range of political parties, are set to engage with African leaders, diplomats, and key stakeholders ahead of the upcoming AU elections later this year.

Moses Wetangula, the leader of the parliamentary delegation, underscored the significance of securing the AUC chairmanship for Kenya. “Raila Odinga is a pan-Africanist with vast experience in governance and diplomacy. His leadership at the AU will benefit not only Kenya but the entire continent,” Wetangula said before the group’s departure.

The delegation's mission is to lobby support for Odinga’s candidacy by meeting with representatives from different African countries and engaging with influential AU officials. Additionally, they are expected to push for a united East African front in the race for the prestigious position.

Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya, announced his interest in the AUC Chairmanship earlier this year. His bid has been endorsed by President William Ruto, though he faces competition from other prominent candidates across the continent.

Political analyst Ahmed Nashi believes that the MPs' trip is critical in solidifying Odinga’s campaign. “Diplomatic engagements at this stage will determine the success of his bid,” Nashi stated, highlighting the importance of early international support.

The MPs will return to Kenya after a series of strategic meetings in Addis Ababa. Upon their return, they will continue to coordinate efforts to rally additional support for Odinga’s candidacy as the race for the AU Chairmanship intensifies.
