Early this morning, National Assembly Speaker Hon. Moses Wetangula welcomed His Excellency Mahi Boumediene, the Algerian Ambassador to Kenya, for a courtesy visit at his office in Parliament Buildings. The discussions between the two leaders focused on reinforcing the strong bilateral ties between Kenya and Algeria, with a particular emphasis on advancing collaboration in key sectors such as technology, higher education, health, and energy and petroleum.
“Our meeting today was a significant step forward in furthering the robust relationship between our two nations. We are committed to building upon the engagements initiated during my visit to Algiers last year, with a shared vision of enhancing cooperation in these vital areas,” said Speaker Wetangula.
The Speaker and Ambassador Boumediene discussed opportunities for strengthening partnerships in technology and innovation, recognizing the growing importance of these sectors in driving economic growth and development. They also explored avenues for expanding educational exchanges, particularly in the fields of higher education and health, as well as increasing collaboration in the energy and petroleum sectors.
Hon. Wetangula extended a formal invitation to the President of the Parliament of Algeria to visit Kenya, with a view to exploring new areas for further collaboration and mutual benefit between the two nations. This invitation is part of Kenya's ongoing efforts to deepen parliamentary diplomacy and foster closer ties with countries across the African continent.
"I believe that parliamentary diplomacy plays a crucial role in shaping the future of bilateral relations. We look forward to strengthening this collaboration through direct exchanges and joint initiatives with our Algerian counterparts," Wetangula stated.
The Speaker also took the opportunity to express his sincere gratitude to the government of Algeria for its unwavering support of Kenya’s candidacy in the recently concluded African Union Commission Chairmanship elections. During the elections, Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, was Kenya’s candidate, and Algeria's backing was deeply appreciated.
In addition to discussing political and economic matters, Speaker Wetangula acknowledged Algeria's ongoing support for Kenyan students, particularly in technology-based scholarship programs. "We are deeply grateful for Algeria’s commitment to educating our youth, especially in fields that are critical to the future of our nation. These scholarships provide our students with invaluable opportunities that will help build Kenya's technological capacity and human capital," he said.
As the conversation drew to a close, Speaker Wetangula took a moment to extend his heartfelt wishes to Algeria and Kenya’s Muslim community as they prepare for the Holy Month of Ramadan. "As our Muslim brothers and sisters prepare to begin the sacred month of Ramadan, I extend my warmest wishes for a period of reflection, prayer, generosity, and peace. May it be a time filled with hope for the future and strengthened bonds between our nations," Wetangula said.
The visit marks an important milestone in the deepening of ties between Kenya and Algeria, as both countries continue to work together to build a future of mutual prosperity and collaboration.
