New Leadership Takes Charge of Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations



Senator Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo) and Prof. Tom Ojienda SC (Kisumu) have been unanimously elected as the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations. Their election was unopposed, marking the beginning of their leadership of the nine-member committee, which plays a crucial role in addressing Security, Defence and Foreign Relations issues.

Following their election, Senator Dullo expressed her gratitude to her colleagues, appreciating their trust and support. She assured them of her dedication to the committee’s work emphasizing that she would focus on ensuring that the committee effectively delivers on its mandate. "We have had challenges in the past but going forward, we shall address various issues touching on Foreign Relations, issues to do with insecurity, cattle rustling among others," she stated.

Senator Dullo also appealed to the members to commit themselves fully to the committee’s work underlining the importance of collaborative effort for successful outcomes. Her call for unity was echoed by Professor Ojienda who stressed the need for teamwork and prioritizing the committee’s activities.

Senator Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi) also spoke after the election voicing his commitment to the committee’s work. He urged his fellow members to engage deeply with the committee’s mandate, particularly on critical issues such as abductions and insecurity. "As a committee, we should dig deeper into various issues that are under our watch, issues such as abductions and insecurity. We should also look at the issue of our country’s Foreign Relations to ensure Kenya gets it right," said Sen. Sifuna.

The National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations Committee consists of Senators Fatuma Dullo (Chairperson), Prof. Tom Ojienda SC (Vice-Chairperson), Dr. Lelegwe Ltumbesi (Samburu), Julius Murgor (West Pokot), Tabitha Keroche (Nakuru), Joseph Githuku (Lamu), Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi), Abdul Haji (Garissa) and Okong’o Mogeni SC (Nyamira).
