Peter Waithaka Macharia, a notorious habitual offender, has been handed a 35-year prison sentence after being convicted of robbery with violence in connection to a fatal armed robbery that occurred in October 2022.
The conviction was delivered by a Kibera court on Tuesday, February 11. Macharia, who had been on the run for several days, was arrested on October 21, 2022, following an intensive investigation led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to a statement by the DCI, the crime took place on October 15, 2022, along Menelik Road in Nairobi. The victim, Angelos Tsekilas, a Greek national, tragically lost his life when he was shot in the chest during the robbery. The armed gang, which consisted of three men, stole a range of valuables from Tsekilas before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
Macharia, one of the suspects, was apprehended at a hideout in Gachie, Kiambu County, after law enforcement officials pieced together evidence from the scene. He was formally charged with robbery with violence on December 28, 2022, under Section 296(2) of the Penal Code.
In a well-prepared case, the prosecution presented compelling evidence that led to Macharia's conviction. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison by Chief Magistrate Hon. Kahuya, who presided over the trial. The DCI applauded the efforts of law enforcement in securing a conviction and called for continued public support in ensuring safety and justice across the country.
The DCI also reiterated the importance of sharing vital information with authorities to assist in combatting crime, urging members of the public to play an active role in enhancing law enforcement efforts.
The sentencing marks a significant step in bringing justice to the victim’s family and serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of violent crimes. Macharia’s lengthy prison term underscores the commitment to holding criminals accountable and maintaining public safety.
