Nyeri County Commissioner Ronald Mwinawi has expressed grave concern over the alarming rise in suicide cases within the region, calling for collective efforts from all residents to address the issue before it becomes a social catastrophe.
In a statement, Mwinawi revealed that over the past three months, suicide cases in the county have escalated significantly, with many individuals falling victim to mental health struggles. The commissioner warned that unless urgent action is taken to tackle the root causes of these tragic incidents, the situation could spiral further out of control.
"For the three months I have been here, suicide cases have been numerous. Suicide has become a thorny issue. I urge people who are experiencing mental health challenges to come forward and talk to us. Let us engage in open dialogue to understand why individuals are resorting to taking their own lives," Mwinawi said. "Let us communicate and support each other so we can reduce these cases and offer help to those in need."
Mwinawi also highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve access to healthcare, noting that the Social Health Authority (SHA) registration drive is a timely initiative that will provide residents with greater access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
"The Social Health Authority is working to ensure that all Kenyans are covered, protected, and have access to the healthcare they deserve. This is a journey that we must walk together. If we have any issues, we should make amendments to the current policies to make sure everyone benefits," he added.
The county commissioner’s call for action comes at a time when the rising mental health concerns and suicides in Nyeri and across the country are drawing increasing attention. Authorities are urging the public to seek support for mental health challenges and take proactive steps to address the root causes of distress in the community.
Mwinawi’s statement has sparked a wider conversation about the need for mental health awareness and accessible healthcare services as vital tools in combating the growing crisis.
