Hon. Dido Rasso, the Member of Parliament for Saku Constituency and Vice Chair of the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Internal Security, has lauded the launch of Operation Ondoa Jangili, a multi-agency initiative targeting criminal networks in Marsabit and Isiolo counties. This operation comes at a critical time, as the northern frontier of Kenya grapples with escalating insecurity that has plagued the region for decades.
From the year 2017, there has been a growing recognition of the complex geographical, economic, and social factors contributing to unrest in the region. The instability has been exacerbated by historical marginalization, underdevelopment, and neglect, leading to widespread poverty and a lack of essential services.
This operation, initiated in response to intelligence reports from the National Intelligence Service (NIS), aims to dismantle the networks of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), a group that has significantly contributed to the region's instability. Security forces have already made substantial progress, recovering a cache of items used by the militia, including weapons, ammunition, communication devices, and other equipment.
He emphasized the importance of this operation in restoring peace and stability to the region. "The safety of our people is paramount, and I fully support this initiative to root out criminal elements destabilizing our region," he stated. He also highlighted the need for sustained government intervention and collaboration between security agencies, local leaders, and residents to achieve lasting peace.
The challenges in northern Kenya are deeply rooted and multifaceted. Historical grievances, economic disparities, and social tensions have created a complex security landscape. Efforts to address these issues have often been hampered by the region's vast and difficult terrain, limited infrastructure, and the mobility of pastoralist communities. The proliferation of small arms and light weapons has further fueled violence, making it challenging to maintain law and order.
Despite these challenges, initiatives like Operation Ondoa Jangili represent a proactive approach to addressing insecurity. By targeting the root causes of violence and involving local communities in peacebuilding efforts, there is hope for a more secure and prosperous future for northern Kenya.
