Despite a dramatic clash that momentarily overshadowed the event, over Ksh 10 million was raised during a fundraiser at Moi’s Bridge Township on Sunday for the victims of the devastating fire that razed several businesses . The funds will go toward helping the affected residents rebuild their livelihoods and restart their businesses.

The event was organized by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, area MCA Bishop Patrick Kimeli, and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, who was the chief guest. The fundraiser aimed to assist residents whose properties were destroyed in the fire, which caused significant losses, particularly for small-scale business owners.

Thousands of residents from Moi's Bridge and surrounding areas attended the fundraiser, which also saw the presence of several high-profile dignitaries. Notable guests included Governors Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet), Stephen Sang (Nandi), Hillary Barchok (Bomet), Simeon Kachapin (West Pokot), and Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Hon. Evans Kapkea.

Members of Parliament also turned out to show their support, with Hon. Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), Hon. Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Hon. David Kiplagat (Soy), Hon. Innocent Mugabe (Likuyani), and Hon. Eric Wamumbi (Mathira) in attendance. MCAs, including Deputy Speaker Hon. Sarah Malel, and other local leaders joined in solidarity with the victims.

The event started on a hopeful note, but political tensions flared when Soy MP David Kiplagat arrived, leading to violent clashes between his supporters and those backing Governor Jonathan Bii. Goons stormed the podium in an attempt to disrupt proceedings, prompting a physical altercation that forced police to intervene.

Despite the chaos, the fundraiser managed to raise a significant amount for the fire victims. The Ksh 10 million raised will go toward helping the affected residents restart their businesses, providing them with much-needed financial support in the wake of the tragedy.

Governor Jonathan Bii expressed gratitude for the support from all the attendees and donors, stressing the importance of unity in rebuilding the community. “Today, we have shown that when tragedy strikes, we can come together to help our fellow citizens,” Bii said, while condemning the violence that briefly marred the event.

The organizers expressed hope that the funds raised would go a long way in providing relief to the victims, helping them rebuild their lives and restore their businesses.

The event concluded after a brief delay, and the political leaders present pledged to continue working together for the betterment of the people of Uasin Gishu and the wider Rift Valley region. While the tensions of the day were a stark reminder of the deep political divides in the region, the overwhelming support for the fire victims stood as a testament to the community's resilience and unity in times of crisis.
