Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has reaffirmed her commitment to addressing gender-based violence after visiting Kenya’s first government-owned safehouse and specialized SGBV units within police stations.
Passaris, accompanied by Harriet Chiggai, the President’s Women’s Rights Advisor, toured the newly established safehouse in Nairobi, a crucial facility designed to offer protection and support to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The government initiative aims to provide a secure haven for victims while facilitating their recovery through counseling, legal aid, and rehabilitation services.
Later in the day, the leaders visited one of the police stations hosting an NGAAF-sponsored SGBV Unit. The National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) has been instrumental in equipping police stations with dedicated units to handle gender-based violence cases with sensitivity and efficiency. These units are expected to streamline reporting mechanisms and enhance access to justice for survivors.
Speaking after the visits, Passaris emphasized the importance of ensuring seamless service delivery for SGBV survivors, highlighting the need for a well-coordinated approach between government agencies, law enforcement, and civil society organizations.
“We are committed to strengthening support systems for survivors of gender-based violence. The establishment of these facilities is a significant step toward ensuring justice, rehabilitation, and empowerment for affected individuals,” she stated.
Her sentiments were echoed by Chiggai, who underscored the government’s resolve to tackle SGBV and protect vulnerable individuals.
The initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader efforts to combat gender-based violence, in line with commitments made under national and international frameworks. With growing calls for justice and support for survivors, stakeholders remain hopeful that such interventions will create safer spaces for those affected by SGBV.
As the country moves toward strengthening its fight against gender-based violence, leaders like Passaris continue to advocate for more resources, policy reforms, and enhanced public awareness to ensure lasting change.
