Police in Eldoret have launched an investigation into a disturbing incident where Eldoret Municipality Manager Tito Koiyet was brutally attacked by a group of rowdy goons in his office. The shocking incident, which occurred during the day, saw Koiyet assaulted in front of his staff by a group believed to be linked to a local politician with ambitions of contesting a top county seat in the upcoming general elections.
According to reports, the attackers were protesting Koiyet’s continued stay in office despite his tenure having expired. The group demanded that he vacate the office immediately to pave the way for the appointment of a new municipality manager. The chaotic scene lasted for about two hours and also saw Koiyet’s secretary injured when she attempted to intervene and protect her boss. She sustained injuries to her left hand as a result of the assault.
A viral video from the incident shows the daring goons dragging Koiyet out of his office while his secretary pleads for mercy on his behalf. The attack has shocked the residents of Uasin Gishu County, with many expressing their concern and calling on the police to swiftly bring the attackers to justice.
Adding to the tension, the goons allegedly threatened police officers investigating previous criminal cases in Eldoret, further heightening concerns about the growing lawlessness in the area.
Koiyet, who has since recorded a statement with the police, claimed that the attack was orchestrated by certain individuals within the system. Before giving his statement to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at Eldoret Central Police Station, Koiyet was treated at a private hospital and later discharged.
“I received treatment before recording my statement with police. My assailants were daring enough, and despite the efforts of my staff to protect me, they were futile,” Koiyet said. He added that he was fortunate to have escaped with light injuries, crediting his survival to divine intervention.
According to Koiyet, the attackers were well-known to him, and he expressed confidence that the police would be able to conclude their investigations quickly. “I am urging the police to move fast and take action against those responsible,” he stated.
The Municipality Board Chair, Julius Kitur, who was present during the attack, condemned the assault and stated that he attempted to restrain the goons but was unsuccessful. "We are disturbed by what happened. I tried my best to prevent the assault on my colleague," Kitur said.
Uasin Gishu County’s Director of Criminal Investigations, Daniel Muleli, confirmed the incident and assured the public that the investigation is ongoing. The authorities are determined to bring the culprits to justice and ensure that such an attack does not go unpunished.
As the investigation unfolds, the residents of Eldoret are hoping that the police will take swift action to restore order and ensure the safety of public officials from acts of political violence.
