Preserving Kenya’s Architectural Heritage,AAK Raises Concern Over State House Renovations

By John Kariuki

The Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) has raised serious concerns regarding the ongoing renovations at Nairobi’s State House, citing the significant compromise of its historical and cultural integrity. While acknowledging the necessity of maintaining the structural soundness and aesthetic value of the building, AAK warns that recent alterations deviate drastically from the classic architectural principles that define this national landmark.

Designed in 1907 by the celebrated British architect Sir Herbert Baker (1862–1946), State House Nairobi is a masterpiece of neo-classical architecture, characterized by symmetry, proportion, and intricate detailing inspired by Doric and Corinthian orders. Despite not being officially designated as a national monument, the State House remains a key symbol of Kenya’s political and social evolution and should be preserved with the utmost care.

However, the recent renovations have raised alarm, with AAK highlighting major changes such as the replacement of the iconic red roofing tiles with modern alternatives. The introduction of an oversized roof parapet has altered the building’s character by giving it a flat roof appearance. The merging of two entrances into a large canopy has disrupted the symmetry and classic proportions of the building. The parapet depth obscures key architectural features such as chimneys, raising concerns about their retention.

The Uhuru Park Pavilion faced a similar fate when it was demolished without due regard for its significance. The AAK warns that the same approach to State House could erase a crucial piece of Kenya’s heritage, depriving future generations of their historical identity.

Around the world, iconic government buildings are carefully preserved to maintain their architectural and cultural value. Countries such as Ethiopia and Ghana have protected their national monuments, ensuring they remain symbols of heritage and continuity. Even globally renowned sites such as Westminster Abbey and the White House have undergone meticulous preservation efforts rather than drastic redesigns.

AAK insists that public buildings and strategic national landmarks requiring renovations should be listed by the National Museums of Kenya and subjected to expert scrutiny before alterations commence. The government must involve professionals and the public in heritage conservation planning to safeguard Kenya’s architectural identity.

The association urges the government to immediately halt further alterations to the State House, establish clear heritage conservation guidelines, and consult heritage experts and the public before making modifications to national landmarks.

As an irreplaceable part of Kenya’s history, the State House must be preserved, not altered beyond recognition. The Architectural Association of Kenya stands ready to offer guidance and expertise to ensure that renovations honor tradition while embracing modernization responsibly.

Heritage be our Splendour.
