President William Ruto today commended the spirited and strategic campaign led by Hon. Raila Odinga for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Reflecting on the just-concluded bid, the President expressed his gratitude to the many supporters and nations across Africa who rallied behind Kenya’s candidacy.

In a statement following discussions with Hon. Odinga at State House, Mombasa, President Ruto highlighted the collective support Kenya received during the campaign, noting that it reinforced the spirit of Pan-African unity. The President acknowledged the profound impact of Hon. Odinga’s campaign message, which resonated across the continent, uniting Eastern Africa and the larger African community with a shared vision of transformation and prosperity.

“Hon. Odinga’s unwavering commitment and presence in nearly every African capital was a testament to Kenya’s leadership and dedication to a united and prosperous Africa,” President Ruto said. “His message of transformation and the need for greater intra-African trade has struck a chord with many and helped amplify the call for greater collaboration across the continent.”

The President also took the opportunity to thank all who contributed to the campaign, with a special mention to the African nations and their leaders for the outpouring of solidarity and support during this significant endeavor. He emphasized the importance of the campaign in strengthening Kenya's ties with its African counterparts and reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to the African Union’s mission.

“While this bid may have ended, our focus remains on advancing the vision for a united continent with enhanced infrastructure to facilitate intra-African trade and development,” President Ruto continued. “We will continue to work alongside our African brothers and sisters to build a continent that is stronger, more resilient, and better positioned to address the challenges of the 21st century.”

The President’s statement comes as Kenya continues to deepen its engagement with the African Union and other regional bodies, with a focus on promoting peace, stability, and economic development across the continent. Kenya’s commitment to the AU’s agenda remains steadfast, and the country will continue to advocate for greater regional integration and prosperity for all Africans.
