The Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Eng. Festus Ngeno, alongside the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Director General, Mamo B. Mamo, EBS, has officially flagged off the World Wetlands Day 10KM Ondiri Wetland Conservation Run.

The event, currently underway at the Ondiri Wetland, aims to raise awareness about the critical role wetlands play in environmental conservation and climate resilience. The 10KM run has brought together environmental stakeholders, conservationists, athletes, and members of the local community, all united in their commitment to protecting and restoring wetland ecosystems.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Dr. Ngeno emphasized the importance of wetlands in mitigating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and ensuring sustainable water resources. He reiterated the government's commitment to strengthening conservation efforts and fostering partnerships to safeguard Kenya’s wetland ecosystems.

“This event is a powerful statement on the role of wetlands in sustaining our environment. Ondiri Wetland, being one of the key freshwater wetlands in Kenya, requires continuous conservation efforts to ensure it remains a thriving ecosystem,” said Dr. Ngeno.

NEMA Director General Mamo B. Mamo echoed the sentiments, stressing the need for community-driven conservation initiatives. He highlighted that wetlands serve as natural water filters, carbon sinks, and habitats for diverse wildlife, making their preservation crucial in the fight against climate change.

The Ondiri Wetland Conservation Run is part of a broader World Wetlands Day celebration, which seeks to reinforce the message of sustainable wetland management. As participants traverse the 10KM route, they not only promote environmental awareness but also contribute to advocacy efforts aimed at protecting Kenya’s invaluable wetland resources.

With wetlands facing increasing threats from human activities, climate change, and pollution, events such as these serve as vital platforms to inspire action and policy-driven interventions for the preservation of Kenya’s natural heritage.
