Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Geoffrey Kaituko, held a productive meeting with Adams Barasa and Brian Otiato from the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU(K)) at his office. The meeting, which served as a courtesy call, focused on addressing the welfare of Kenya’s seafarers both domestically and internationally.
During the discussions, Kaituko emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of Kenyan seafarers, particularly as they face challenges in the global maritime industry. The conversation also centered on key actions needed to enhance the working conditions and protections for seafarers, ensuring their interests are well represented on both local and international platforms.
Brian Otiato, a member of the newly established Seafarers Wages Council, and Adams Barasa, COTU’s International Advisor on Labour matters to COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, played a pivotal role in the talks. Otiato's involvement in the Seafarers Wages Council highlights the growing efforts to ensure fair wages for Kenyan seafarers, while Barasa’s advisory role provides a broader perspective on international labor relations affecting Kenyan maritime workers.
PS Kaituko expressed optimism about the collaborative efforts between the government and COTU to improve the conditions of Kenya's seafarers. He reiterated his commitment to working closely with key stakeholders to find sustainable solutions for the sector.
