PS Kello Harsama Commissions Rehabilitation of Golole Water Project to Boost Climate Resilience

By John Kariuki

In a major step toward enhancing water access and climate resilience in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), Principal Secretary for ASALs and Regional Development, Hon. PS Kello Harsama, has commissioned the rehabilitation of the Golole Water Project in Marsabit County. The initiative is set to benefit 500 households by providing clean water for domestic use and livestock, supporting the livelihoods of local pastoralist communities.

With a capacity to support 1,000 livestock, the rehabilitated water project is a critical resource for communities that rely on pastoralism, an economic mainstay in the ASALs regions. The project plays a vital role in strengthening resilience against climate change and addressing the increasing frequency of droughts, which continue to threaten water security and food production in these areas.

Speaking at the commissioning, PS Harsama emphasized the government’s commitment to climate adaptation and resilience, aligning with national priorities to sustain livelihoods and ensure water availability for both people and livestock. He noted that access to reliable water sources is crucial for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and sustaining pastoralism.

The event was attended by County Commissioner Mr. James Kamau, Chairman of the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) Board Mr. Shallow Yahya, NDMA CEO Lt. Col (Rtd) Hared Adan, Secretary ASALs Maria Cherono HSC, and other senior government officials, reflecting the collaborative efforts in driving sustainable development in ASAL regions.

This initiative is part of ongoing government interventions to improve water infrastructure and enhance climate resilience in arid and semi-arid counties, ensuring long-term sustainability and economic stability for affected communities.
