Water & Sanitation Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Korir and Mining PS Elijah Mwangi are leading efforts to enhance water security in Lamu County through the Lamu Desalination Project, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative aimed at providing safe and reliable water to the region.
In a high-level meeting held today, the two PSs engaged with the project proponents and technical teams from both ministries to align strategies for project implementation. The desalination process will not only ensure a steady water supply for Lamu town, the LAPSSET Corridor, Lamu Port, and key public facilities, but it will also incorporate mineral recovery from brine, requiring coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Water & Sanitation and the Ministry of Mining.
PS Korir emphasized the critical role of sustainable water solutions in driving development, particularly in coastal and arid regions, while PS Mwangi highlighted the economic potential of mineral recovery as an added benefit of the project. The two leaders committed to seamless inter-ministerial collaboration from the proof-of-concept stage to project closure, ensuring efficiency and long-term success.
With Lamu’s increasing strategic importance, this initiative marks a significant milestone in water infrastructure development, setting a precedent for future PPP-driven projects aimed at addressing Kenya’s water challenges.
