Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has lauded President William Ruto for fulfilling a key campaign promise made during the 2022 Presidential election, namely, the removal of the vetting requirement for identity cards for the North Eastern communities, a practice that had been in place since Kenya’s independence.
In a statement shared earlier this week, Cherargei highlighted that this long-overdue change was not only a promise kept by President Ruto but also a significant step in ensuring equality and justice for all Kenyans. He noted that the requirement for vetting had been a violation of Article 27 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, which guarantees equality and non-discrimination for all citizens.
"President Ruto’s commitment to remove the vetting for identity cards in the North Eastern region has finally been honored, ending a practice that has been divisive and discriminatory for decades," said Cherargei. "This is a historic moment, and it shows the President's resolve to fulfill his promises and address the long-standing injustices facing various communities."
Cherargei also reflected on the surprise element of Ruto’s achievement, noting that many of the President’s political opponents were taken aback by his ability to deliver on this and other campaign promises. He emphasized that, while some were skeptical of Ruto’s chances in the 2022 race, the President’s bold actions in office have already shown his leadership and commitment to improving the lives of all Kenyans.
"Many of his opponents did not expect him to rise to the occasion and become the President of Kenya. But here he is, delivering on promises one by one," Cherargei remarked. "From the removal of vetting for ID cards to several other key initiatives, President Ruto is proving that his leadership is transformative."
In closing, the Senator hinted that the country can expect even more surprises in the future, specifically in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. “The best is yet to come. Let them wait for more shocks in 2027,” Cherargei teased, further building anticipation among the public and political circles.
Senator Cherargei’s comments come as President Ruto continues to deliver on various campaign promises, earning praise from different quarters for his proactive leadership and efforts to unify the country.
