Senator Tabitha Karanja Calls for Continued Commitment to Strengthening Devolution

Senate Deputy Majority Leader and Nakuru County Senator, Tabitha Karanja, has urged fellow Senators to remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding devolution, transparency, and accountability during their legislative duties. Her call was made during the Senate’s midterm retreat in Nakuru County, where she emphasized the critical role of devolution in improving the lives of Kenyans.

In her address, Sen. Karanja stressed the importance of working together to strengthen devolution, ensuring that it serves its ultimate purpose of benefiting the people. “As we engage in robust discussions and deliberations during this retreat, let us keep in mind the ultimate goal of devolution—to improve the lives of our people. We must remain focused on the principles of accountability, transparency, and public participation,” she said.

Sen. Karanja also reminded her colleagues of their responsibility to deliver on the aspirations of their constituents. “Our constituents have entrusted us with their aspirations, and it is our duty to fulfill those aspirations with unwavering dedication and commitment,” she added.

The Senator acknowledged the efforts of key institutions, including the Council of Governors, County Assemblies Forum, the State Department for Devolution, and the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGTRC), in advancing the devolution agenda. She also highlighted the significant contributions made by the Offices of the Auditor General and Controller of Budget in promoting transparency and accountability in the devolution process.

“As the Senate, we can attest to the immense contribution that these offices have made in advancing the dream of devolution. I am hopeful that these meetings will identify legislative gaps and priority areas for intervention, ensuring that devolution continues to thrive,” emphasized Sen. Karanja.

The Senate’s midterm retreat is providing a vital platform for Senators to assess the progress of devolution, identify challenges, and strategize on solutions to enhance its effectiveness for the benefit of the nation. The retreat is expected to yield recommendations on legislative reforms and key areas requiring intervention to support devolution's growth and impact.

Sen. Karanja concluded by reaffirming her commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure that devolution remains a powerful tool for the development of Kenya.
