Social Protection Committee to Engage PS Monari Over Looming Inua Jamii Cash Crisis

The Social Protection Committee, chaired by Hon. Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town), reconvenes today to address a looming financial crisis that threatens to disrupt the livelihoods of thousands of vulnerable Kenyans under the Inua Jamii cash transfer program. The fund supports the elderly, people living with severe disabilities, households facing extreme poverty and vulnerable children in society.

Principal Secretary for Social Protection and Senior Citizens Affairs, Joseph Motari, is expected to provide clarity on the Ministry’s budget constraints after admitting that funds for the program have been exhausted, casting doubt on facilitation between March and July 2025.

The session follows an adjournment in yesterday’s meeting, where legislators halted Motari’s presentation after detecting irregularities and errors in the submitted budget policy statement documents. Lawmakers reminded the PS that Parliament is a house of records and order, demanding a revised and accurate submission.

Lawmakers are set to engage the PS from 10:30 a.m. today to strategize on urgent solutions to avert a crisis that could leave the elderly and vulnerable without their much-needed support.
