A tragic road accident occurred on the morning of Monday, February 17, when a Climax Bus veered off the Nairobi-Kisumu Highway near Awasi, along the J.O. Nyadenge Auto-spares & Garage area. The bus overturned near the Awasi trading center, causing multiple injuries. Several victims have been rushed to Awasi Mission Hospital and Ahero Sub-County Hospital for immediate medical treatment.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency teams working to free individuals trapped inside the wreckage of the bus. Eyewitnesses report seeing the bus lying on its side, surrounded by onlookers as rescue efforts continue. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest that the incident could be attributed to factors such as reckless driving, poor road conditions, and possible speeding.
Many Kenyans have expressed their grief over the tragic incident, with growing calls for improved road safety across the country. "Immediate action must be taken against the management of the bus company," said one concerned onlooker. "This accident is a result of poor management, reckless driving, and a complete disregard for road safety."
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has also weighed in on the incident, urging all road users to adhere to traffic regulations to reduce fatalities. In a statement, NTSA warned that reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, improper overtaking, and speeding are leading causes of accidents in Kenya. They reiterated that such behaviors on the road are a direct path to tragedy.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we must all do our part to ensure the safety of ourselves and others,” the NTSA stated. "Failure to adhere to traffic rules puts lives—including your own—at risk. We urge all motorists to drive responsibly to ensure safer roads for everyone."
As the investigation continues and rescue operations unfold, the accident serves as a tragic reminder of the pressing need for stronger enforcement of road safety regulations and a collective effort to address the factors contributing to the alarming number of road accidents in Kenya.
