Uasin Gishu County Condemns Attack on Municipality Officials, Assures Enhanced Security

Police have initiated an investigation into a violent incident involving Eldoret Municipality Manager Tito Koiyet, who was assaulted by a group of goons in his office. The attack, which took place during daylight hours, saw Koiyet and his staff subjected to physical assault by the group, who allegedly have ties to a local politician. The goons are reportedly angered by Koiyet's continued tenure in the office, despite his term expiring, and are demanding his immediate removal to make way for the appointment of a new municipality manager.

The chaos unfolded as the attackers, who were described as rowdy, stormed Koiyet’s office, delivering kicks and blows. The manager’s secretary, who tried to intervene and protect him, was also beaten and sustained injuries to her left hand. The disturbance lasted for approximately two hours, during which the assailants forcefully ejected Koiyet from his office. A video of the incident has since gone viral, showing the goons in action as Koiyet's secretary desperately pleads for mercy.

The violent episode has left residents of Uasin Gishu County in shock, and there have been widespread calls for authorities to bring the culprits to justice. The attackers even threatened law enforcement officers investigating previous cases involving them, raising further concerns among the public.

Koiyet, after receiving medical treatment at a private hospital, filed a statement with the police at Eldoret Central Police Station. He described the assault as being orchestrated by "dark forces" from within the local government. He expressed gratitude for escaping with only minor injuries, attributing his survival to divine intervention.

"I received treatment before recording my statement with police. My assailants were daring enough, and despite efforts by my staff to protect me, the attack was inevitable," Koiyet said. He also revealed that the attackers were well-known to him and urged the police to expedite the investigation and hold the suspects accountable.

The Municipality Board Chair, Julius Kitur, who was present during the attack, said he attempted to restrain the attackers but was unsuccessful. "We are disturbed by what happened. I did my best to stop the goons from assaulting my colleague," Kitur said.

Uasin Gishu County's Director of Criminal Investigations, Daniel Muleli, confirmed the incident and assured the public that investigations are underway to ensure justice is served.

In response to the attack, Uasin Gishu County has strongly condemned the incident and expressed deep concern over the disruption caused during a meeting between municipality officials and local traders. The unidentified individuals, who stormed the meeting, not only assaulted the town manager but also harassed other municipality staff.

Speaking on behalf of the county, Acting County Secretary Mr. Ambrose Tarus assured the public that the county government will not tolerate such acts of violence against its staff. "As a county, we assure our staff of their safety and welfare. Incidents like these are unacceptable and will not be condoned," said Mr. Tarus. "The matter has been reported to the police and is currently under investigation."

To address security concerns, the county has implemented enhanced measures to protect its employees, visitors, and residents. These measures include security screenings at entry points, restricted access for individuals without official identification badges, and the requirement for visitors to present appointment letters. Additionally, armed police officers will now be stationed at the municipality offices to ensure heightened security.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, authorities are working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. The county has pledged transparency and swift action once the perpetrators are unveiled.

Mr. Tarus further reassured residents, traders, journalists, and visitors to Uasin Gishu County that their security remains a top priority. "We will deal firmly with anyone threatening the peace and safety of our community," he stated. The county urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as investigations continue.

As the investigation progresses, residents and local leaders are anxiously awaiting the identification and prosecution of those responsible for this shocking assault.
