Uasin Gishu County has taken a bold step in empowering women and youth in Langas Ward through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLoCA) by launching the Langas Poultry Initiative. This program, which is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable agriculture and climate resilience, has provided training and resources to local groups on poultry rearing, with a special focus on women, youth, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The initiative kicked off with a comprehensive capacity-building session for eight groups in the community, all of which include women, youth, and PWDs. The training was led by David Wachira, a livestock expert from the Department of Livestock, who equipped participants with essential knowledge on poultry management, including the best practices for rearing chickens, disease control, and maximizing productivity.
At the heart of the program is the distribution of 1,200 one-month-old improved Kienyeji chicks and three incubators to the groups. The chicks were evenly distributed, ensuring that each group received a fair share of the resources to start their poultry ventures. These resources are expected to significantly improve food security and economic opportunities for the beneficiaries.
Director Philip Lagat, who was present at the event, expressed his optimism about the program’s potential to improve livelihoods. "This initiative is not just about poultry; it’s about transforming the economic landscape of Langas Ward. By equipping these groups with the right knowledge and resources, we are fostering self-sufficiency and creating opportunities for economic growth."
Abigail Kibet, the Climate Change Unit Coordinator, also attended the event and emphasized the importance of locally-led climate action. “This program aligns with our county’s climate goals. Not only does it empower women and youth, but it also builds resilience against climate challenges by promoting sustainable agricultural practices that are both eco-friendly and economically viable.”
The Langas Poultry Initiative is seen as a pivotal move in promoting gender equality and inclusive development.
The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude and excitement. Jane Nyambura, a member of one of the participating women’s groups, shared her excitement, saying, "This is a game-changer for us. We now have the skills and resources to build successful poultry farms. The knowledge we’ve gained today will help us create better futures for our children and improve our community's livelihoods."
