Uasin Gishu County is intensifying its efforts to develop sports talent through a variety of programs aimed at identifying and nurturing young athletes. County Director of Sports, Nicholas Busienei, highlighted these initiatives during a multi-sports Sunday event at Uasin Gishu Primary School.
Speaking at the event, Busienei emphasized the significance of the Governor’s Cup tournaments in identifying potential sports stars right from the grassroots level. “These tournaments are key to unearthing talent and giving young athletes a platform to showcase their abilities,” he said.
The Governor’s Cup, a football competition, is set to expand into Sub-County championships, further extending its reach to more aspiring sportspeople. This initiative aligns with the fifth pillar of Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii’s governance plan, which focuses on the growth and development of sports within the region.
The County Government, through its Department of Sports, regularly invites sports managers to scout for talent during the Governor’s Cup tournaments. This strategy has already yielded impressive results, with four youth volleyball players from Uasin Gishu securing job opportunities and spots at top clubs following talent identification during the 2023 competitions.
On Sunday, Uasin Gishu Primary Grounds hosted various exciting matches, including the Football Kenya Federation’s Uasin Gishu branch men's and women's league fixtures, Uasin Gishu basketball league games, and volleyball friendlies. The event was a clear demonstration of the county’s commitment to fostering talent in a variety of sports disciplines.
Through these efforts, Uasin Gishu County continues to build a strong foundation for its athletes, positioning them for success at regional, national, and international levels.
