Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Launches Drainage System Construction in Kimumu Under FLLoCA Program

The Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu County, H.E. Evans Kapkea, officially launched the construction of a drainage system in Kimumu on Tuesday, a significant initiative under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Program (FLLoCA). The project aims to enhance the area’s infrastructure with the construction of a closed drainage channel, installation of culverts, and improvements to the existing open drainage system.

Speaking at the launch event, Deputy Governor Kapkea highlighted the urgency of the project, noting that it must be completed before the onset of the rainy season. “We have a 120-day timeline for this project, but I am confident we can deliver it within 90 days,” said Kapkea, stressing that timely completion was crucial to prevent flooding and other challenges that come with heavy rains.

The Deputy Governor also underscored the importance of maintaining professionalism throughout the project’s execution. “We have engaged a contractor with the expertise to handle this work, and we expect the highest quality standards in all technical aspects,” Kapkea added.

One of the key elements of the project is the involvement of the local community, particularly the youth. Kapkea emphasized the need for providing employment opportunities to local youth through casual contracts. “Our youth should be the biggest beneficiaries of this project, and we are committed to creating job opportunities for them as part of this initiative,” he stated.

In addition to employment, Kapkea advocated for sourcing materials locally to ensure the wider community benefits from the project. “We want to make sure that the community as a whole benefits, and utilizing local suppliers will contribute to that goal,” he explained.

Also present at the event was Deputy Speaker Hon. Sarah Malel, who noted that Kimumu stands to gain significantly from the FLLoCA program. “Kimumu is the biggest beneficiary of FLLoCA, and this drainage system will have a transformative impact on the lives of residents here,” Hon. Malel said.

The project is supported by an allocation of 11 million Kenyan shillings, prioritized under Nguzo number 7. Both the county executive and the County Assembly have worked together closely to ensure the successful implementation of this essential infrastructure.

The improved drainage system is expected to address flooding challenges and enhance sanitation for the residents of Kimumu, offering a long-term solution to these pressing issues.

Also in attendance at the launch were the Director of Environment Mr. Barno, Eng. Cherono, FLLoCA Coordinator Ms. Kibet, FLLoCA CCU Members, and the local residents of Kimumu.
