Uasin Gishu Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Receives Praise for KISIP Progress in Eldoret's Informal Settlements

Uasin Gishu County Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim has received widespread commendations from the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Programme (KISIP) National Team for the remarkable progress made in improving infrastructure within Eldoret's informal settlements through the KISIP program.

The accolades were delivered during a visit to Uasin Gishu County, where delegates assessed the ongoing projects aimed at transforming the region’s informal settlements. Mr. George Arwa, the National Coordinator for KISIP, revealed that Uasin Gishu County is one of the highest-funded regions in the country under the program, with a project completion rate of 65%. This impressive achievement highlights the effective implementation and successful progress of the KISIP projects in the area.

Governor Bii expressed his gratitude for the recognition, attributing much of the success to the collaborative efforts of the County Project Implementation Team, led by County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Mr. Edward Sawe. "Our team has been crucial in ensuring that all environmental and social safeguards are swiftly addressed, ensuring that the project progresses with minimal disruptions," said Governor Bii.

The Governor also acknowledged the early challenges faced due to heavy rainfall at the start of the project but reassured stakeholders that the county has maintained steady progress. He shared that the works are expected to be completed by the end of June.

World Bank team leader Mr. Raymond Kirwa praised the outstanding progress, crediting the contractor's efficiency and the adherence to project timelines. "The success of this project is a testament to the hard work and commitment of all parties involved," said Mr. Kirwa.

Mr. Ganties Singh Kohler from AFD also expressed his satisfaction with the progress and assured that funding for the projects would be increased in the future to ensure that these developments benefit a wider population, acknowledging the transformative impact of the project.

Deputy Governor H.E. Evans Kapkea welcomed the national team and highlighted the profound impact KISIP has had on the residents of Eldoret's informal settlements. "The changes brought about by KISIP are evident in the improved quality of life for the residents. These projects are not just about infrastructure; they are about uplifting communities and creating opportunities," said Deputy Governor Kapkea.

The delegation also visited key beneficiaries of the project, including Segero, KK, Kasarani, Shauri, Kipkaren, and Mwanzo, all of which have experienced significant improvements. These upgrades include the construction of tarmacked roads, installation of high-mast lights, building of ablution blocks, development of drainage systems, and the creation of walkways. These interventions are transforming the settlements and creating a better environment for residents to live, work, and thrive.

Hon. Francis Muya, the MCA for Langas Ward, emphasized the importance of collaboration between executive leadership, the county assembly, and international partners, noting that such teamwork is key to achieving sustainable development goals.

Among the senior officials present at the event were Chief Officer for Housing and Urban Development Mr. Julius Koech, Zenah Kirui of the NPCT, Veronica Koech of Pamoja Trust, and directors Nelly Jerotich and Beatrice Menjo.

As Uasin Gishu County continues its journey toward development, the KISIP program remains a crucial catalyst in improving infrastructure and raising the standard of living for thousands of residents in the county.
