Kitale is set to witness a transformative leap in its economic and trading landscape with the completion of the ultra-modern Railway Fresh Produce Market. This initiative, a collaboration between the national government and the county government, is a testament to progress and community empowerment.
Funded by the national government to the tune of Ksh. 100 million and made possible through a 2.5-acre land donation by the county government, the market stands as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project. It was established to resettle and empower traders who were displaced from the Chanuka Market during the development of the Kitale-Suam One-Stop Border Point Project.
During the groundbreaking on the November 5, 2022, Trans-Nzoia Governor H.E George Natembeya, emphasized the significance of this project for local traders.
“This market is more than just a structure; it’s a symbol of resilience and opportunity for our people,” he remarked during the groundbreaking ceremony.
Once officially handed over to the county government in the coming months, the market will offer a modern and vibrant space for 1,500 traders to thrive. Beyond serving as a trading hub, it signifies a shared commitment to fostering economic growth and improving livelihoods within the region.
As the finishing touches are placed on this landmark development, the Railway Fresh Produce Market is poised to become a cornerstone of progress, uplifting Kitale’s trading community while honoring the spirit of collaboration.
Speaking on the development Trans Nzoia County Chief Officer Trade and Industrialization Omar Ndiema emphasized that the new market, with capacity to accommodate over 1,500 traders, would not only decongest the town but also provide small-scale traders with a dignified space to conduct their businesses.
“This is a significant step toward reorganizing trade in Kitale. Traders who have been operating along the streets will now have a proper, secure place to run their businesses, and the town will regain its orderly charm,” said Mr. Ndiema.
He urged traders to cooperate with the county officials in ensuring a smooth transition once the final touches on construction are completed. The Chief Officer also revealed plans to operationalize the Msinde Muliro Market, which is nearing completion, offering further opportunities for traders and reducing reliance on street vending.
“This initiative is not just about Kitale town. As a department, we aim to operationalize all markets constructed at the ward and sub-county levels. This will provide business hubs across the county, boosting local economies and providing a conducive environment for trade to thrive,” Ndiema explained.
Mr. Ndiema also reassured residents that the County’s Department of Trade is committed to fostering business growth, enhancing revenue collection, and strengthening Trans Nzoia’s economy. “We are working tirelessly to create the right environment for businesses to flourish, ensuring the people of Trans Nzoia have the tools they need to thrive economically,” he concluded.
